Hump day Wednesday…………Training on the Go!

Training on the Go!

Whenever I head off for some R&R, I always make sure I have something with me, some sort of backup gym, so that I can get my “zen on”.  Training gives me that, the harder I train, the more “zen” I create for myself.  I told my sister the other day.  If I am feeling tired and “off”, my cure all is a good sweat.  I need to sweat.  To be my happiest, I must sweat.  It is my RESET, it is my REBOOT, it is my battery RECHARGER.  It’s just what I do.  Some need to read, some need to nap, I need to sweat.  That is what makes us all so individual and perfect.

Here I am in Hatteras, enjoying this amazingly peaceful setting.  Everyday, I could not wait to get outside and find my workout.  I brought my jump rope and my TRX on my travels, knowing “I was covered”, and could crush a workout with these two favorite toys.

I then discovered a bench, that went with the picnic table out back………….perfect.  I could do step ups, jump squats, lateral leg lifts from a step up, back leg lifts from a step up, inverted pushups, decline pushups, donkey kicks, all leg lift variations on all fours-balancing on the bench. Planks.  My imagination went wild!

One fantastic day, I went on a power walk on the beach, and for those that know Hatteras, know that its beaches are filled with fishermen casting from the shore break.  As luck would have it, on my walk, I couldn’t help but notice a fisherman working so hard reeling in his catch.  He was pulling, and reeling, and pulling and reeling.  I just had to see what was on the other end.  I waited with baited breath!  Finally, here it comes.  Here it is.  The great catch of the day;  It was the ROPE you see in the lower left hand corner of the picture collage.  To much disappointment of the fisherman, it was not the catch he had hoped for. He again worked tirelessly untangling the rope from his line.  With a “gloom” on his face, he tossed the rope to the side of his truck.

With great glee in my voice, I asked him his plans for the rope.  He said it would find its home in a trash can.  I asked him, since that was his plan for the rope, if he wouldn’t mind if I took it.  Well, if you could only imagine the look on his face.  Why?, he asks.  I told him that, that was the best catch that he could have ever have reeled in for me.  I told him, that for me it is a fantastic fitness tool.  Another “toy for my tool box”.

I wiped that “gloom” from his face and he perked right up.  He said, “well, if that is not a first”.  I assured him that he truly just made my day and that it now had the best of homes and that “I would play with it often!”.

I dragged the rope all the way back to the house, I found it’s place and knew what my workout was for the next day.  Repurpose, Reuse, Recycle!

It is the best thing ever.  My big battling rope is too big to just carry around, and this “Baby Hattie” is just perfect.  It took some battling to get the sand and water out of it, and wow, if that was not a crazy, messy, empowering workout. Ha!

My client’s cringe now when I tell them we are playing with “Baby Hattie” today.  But, then again, they are overjoyed that “Big Bertha” is not coming.  That is my monster rope.

Working out should not be a chore.  Make it an adventure.  Make it new and exciting everyday.  Move in every plane, do big movements and compliment those with small movements.  Shake it up and roll the dice.  Your body feels different everyday……………..so move differently everyday.  Our body always tells us what we need and how we should move, we just do not always listen to our “body language”.   Variety is the spice of life.  Make your workout different and innovative everyday, and everyday you will look forward to it.

That holds true for your FUNCTIONAL FLEXIBILITY program as well.  RESET the muscles used in your training for optimal recovery and ongoing movement.  Need ideas, check out my “store” page.

In Happiness and Health,
